Site Exploration and Analysis

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

The Hilsea Lines are a line of fortifications built at Hilsea around 150 years ago. The manmade structure was implicit in forming Portsea Island; separating Portsmouth from the mainland by the Portsbridge Creek.

Foxes Forest, a pocket of untamed wilderness, resides within the lines. The rural escape provides contrast to the surrounding urban environment; a palette of various greens, browns and blues paint the forest.

Dense vegetation: dense tree cover on the ramparts3.

• Biodiverse: wealth of plant and animal life, some of it very rare.

• Contains existing structures. The land has been excavated for defence purposes to create moats

and embankments.

• Strong connection to the urban environment and has the only railway line serving the island

dissecting the Hilsea Lines.

• Saltwater lake

Site Analysis Part 1: Hilsea Lines, 1:2500 Scale

After an atmospheric exploration of the site, I took numerous analysis' of surrounding transport routes and uses of land, as well as an environmental analysis' of the wind direction from the south and noise pollution from transport.

Site Analysis Part 2: Hilsea Lines, 1:1000 Scale

Closer inspection of the site is shown above in 1:500 scale. This map details the sunpath and the access routes to my building. The main access routes are by public footpaths from the South, and a main public path for both cyclists and pedestrians; parallel to Portsbridge Creek and the A47, and stretching either side of lines.
