In the process of research for my client, I researched information by the early years foundation stage (EYFS). This is a government set of standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. This framework states that in learning, children develop skills in five main areas of development:
Cognitive Development
The child’s ability to learn and solve problems.
Social and Emotional Development
The child’s ability to interact with others, including helping themselves and self-control.
Speech and Language Development
The child’s ability to both understand and use language.
Fine Motor Skill Development
The child’s ability to use small muscles, specifically their hands and fingers.
Gross Motor Skill Development
The child’s ability to use large muscles.
Areas of learning
Learning and development covers the 7 key areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which are:
Personal, social and emotional development
Communication and language
Physical development
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design

The EYFS states that “the safety and stability of the premises, environment, and equipment the children in your setting use, must be fit for purpose. Premises (both indoor and outdoor play areas) needs to be suitable for the age of children in your care.” The EYFS even specifies how much indoor space is required for each child, based on their age. I were to ensure I met the following indoor space requirements:
Children under two years: 3.5m2 per child.
Two-year-olds: 2.5 m2 per child.
Children aged three to five years: 2.3 m2 per child.
