Design Brief and Interpretation

My project ’learning through landscape’ is inspired by the current changes in society (caused by COVID), and Robert Macfarlane's book ‘Landmarks’, in which he emphasises the many words associated with the natural world that have been removed from the dictionary as our lives change.

I have been invited to design a modestly sized Forest kindergarten School within the landscape setting of Foxes Forest; an urban manmade woodland that has grown in and around the ancient fortifications of the Hilsea Lines. It is to provide an extraordinary early year’s learning experience where children can reconnect to nature and learn from it.

I have been asked to consider the following matters of concern: The relationship with nature and learning, how can we could learn from the natural world and what role architecture can play in learning and wellbeing.

Through your architecture you should aim to:

Exploit the landscape setting by revealing the natural and manmade beauty of the area. Encourage outdoor education through the use of its location. Be sustainable in its architecture use local and natural materials. Utilise timber in some way (conceptually or through its construction).

The design development (process) of your project is to be shared in form of a blog
